Lucidity partners with local not-for-profit Back2Bikes

Back2Bikes is a not-for-profit whose mission is to provide bicycle training services, and bike recycling for the local community. Based in a cheerily painted workshop off Williamstown Road in Port Melbourne, this sustainability-focussed social enterprise is powered by volunteers who refurbish around 20-30 bikes a week. Pre-loved or abandoned bicycles are donated by generous locals, body corporates and even by the police. These refurbished bikes are then sold to the public as well as provided to nearby schools, and to various welfare and aid agencies who distribute them to disadvantaged people in need of transport.

Founder Mike King has seen the number of commuter cyclists skyrocket since he started the organisation in 2012. In response to ongoing demand for bicycles and servicing at Back2Bikes, his latest project involves building a program to manage bike maintenance, attendance, invoice payments, online shopping and inventory. To this end, he recruited a team of cadet developers from Coder Academy, looking to practise newfound coding skills. Then, he put out a call for workspace in the neighbourhood, and Lucidity answered.

So for the past few months, Lucidity staff have shared their office, provided tech advice and enjoyed the occasional Friday lunch with volunteer developers from Back2Bikes. What’s more, the partnership has encouraged many Lucidity staff members to spend more time in the saddle. Lucidity CTO Wayn Wong, Product Manager Andrew Sweatman, Tech Lead Cale O’Bryan and Senior Software Developer Chinto Batbold all regularly ride to work and service their bicycles at Back2Bikes. Business Analyst Jake also recently picked up a nice set of wheels for his regular commute.

Aside from getting the team active and spending more time out in the fresh air, Lucidity's partnership with Back2Bikes is a step towards supporting sustainability at a local level. Mike does warn however, of the tendency for Back2Bike volunteers - all avid cyclists - to own more than one bike, a symptom of the bike disease!
